One of the most common lies about losing weight is that the older you are, the easier it will be. A brand new study suggests that believing this lie is a huge mistake. Age does not affect the ability to lose weight.

The journal Scientific Endocrinology published a study in October 2020 that examined the relationship between overweight patients and their age. Researchers found that patients over 60 could make lifestyle changes to lose weight just as effectively as younger people.

Researchers in the UK worked with 242 overweight patients who were randomly selected and participated in a hospital weight-problems service between 2005 and 2016. The plan included both dietary and psychological support. The patients were divided into two groups: those aged 60 or older, and those under 60. The weight-loss interventions ranged from one month up to 143 months. However, the results showed that patients aged 60 years and older lost weight just as well as the younger group. Researchers and doctors measured both weight and BMI, and found no significant difference between the groups.

Researchers concluded that age shouldn’t be a factor in a weight-loss program based on lifestyle changes. They also noted that the study was hospital-based and therefore, it may be different for those who are looking to lose weight on their own.

It is wrong to think that as you age, weight loss becomes more difficult. It may be that older adults can achieve the same results as someone half their age by simply using a different approach. Remember that the patients in this study were paired up with doctors who helped them through the process, which ultimately proved successful. If you’re embarking on your own weight loss journey, it may not be a bad idea to also seek the help of medical professionals who will tailor specific lifestyle modifications for you. These can include your primary care physician, a private coach, a registered dietitian or nutritionist.
