In early 2016, researchers asked different teams to cover for an additional individual in a small kitchen stocked with carrots, crackers and cookies.
It was a messier kitchen with papers and piles of dirty dishes. Researchers made the phone ring to increase the chaos. The other half of the women waited with the same snacks in the same kitchen, but the room was cleaned, and all the dishes were put away.
After ten minute of preparation, the women trapped in the chaotic environment consumed an additional 53 calories from cookies — twice as much as the women in the calm and orderly kitchen.
